JULIE SPACKMAN | In February 2024, the South Knik River Community Council requested staff support to create a Special Land Use District (also known as a “SpUD”). When seeking approval by the Assembly to assign staff to the project, the Planning Department determined that the 2009 process for creating a SpUD was outdated and needed revisions.
A new three-option process was drafted and will go before the Planning Commission on Monday, September 16, 2024, and then the Assembly on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. The revised process would also be used to develop or revise Community Comprehensive Plans. The three-option process gives Community Councils the opportunity to decide how much Planning staff support they want when drafting a SpUD or Community Comprehensive plan (Plan). The revised process can be found in the Sept. 16, 2024 Planning Commission packet (pages 35-58).
The public is invited to participate in the Planning Commission public hearing and/or submit public comments to the MSB Clerk’s office. The Assembly will consider a resolution to adopt the revised process on the Consent Agenda at the October 1 meeting, unless it is pulled for discussion by a member of the Assembly.
Once a SpUD or Community Comprehensive plan is drafted, all three process options follow the same final steps. The draft is first presented to the Planning Commission, and then it goes to the Assembly for final consideration
